The World of Choral Music 1

Hymns and Worship Songs

When I first started in singing in the mid 1980s. Most of my early musical experiences were of singing traditional church music or Choral music in an all male boys choir.

The most basic type of choral music is the English Hymn or German Chorale. I learned over 200 of them in my 12 years as a church chorister some of them in harmony as a bass, alto or tenor. As part of my musical education I have sung all 4 parts in my life. Treble, Countertenor, Tenor and Baritone. Traditional English hymns are in 4 parts.

On the right are some of my favourites and here is my favourite daily hymn. The Baptist hymn And Can it Be composed by Charles Wesley.

The modern equivalent of the hymn is the song of worship or Christian rock song. Let’s look at some examples.

This is probably my favourite modern hymn

Here are a few more examples of great modern Christian hits.

I used to perform some of these in a Baptist worship group on the fiddle and vocals.

Let’s end this section with another two of the greatest modern songs of worship.
